BOE to lower mill levy
By Chad Frey Newton Kansan The Newton USD 373 Board of Education voted for a budget proposal that would lower the mill levy for schools, but that does not necessarily mean the tax bill will go down. The proposal would drop the mill levy from 53.36 to 52.84, a half of a mill decrease.
Hesston Road project slowed, but moving forward
By Chad Frey Newton Kansan The largest road project by Harvey County in decades has hit any number of snags and delays in its second phase - though this week contractors were able to make headway on phase II of the Old-81/Hesston Road project between Zimmerdale and Hesston. “They are out there today [Tuesday], they were out there yesterday,” said Jim Meier, superintendent of the Harvey County Road and Bridge Department.
COVID-19 case numbers continue increase
By Chad Frey Newton Kansan Covid-19 is continuing a rebound in Harvey County as case numbers continue to rise. “Our case level remains high,” said Lynette Redington, director of the Harvey County Health Department.

City sets expenditure limit, date of public hearing
By Chad Frey Newton Kansan Before she voted to approve a not-toexceed budget for the city of Newton, city commissioner Kathy Valentine wanted to go to bat for Grand Central the senior center operated on East Sixth Street. For a number of years the city has given the senior center about $20,000 in funds to assist with operations.

Foresters three-peat at NBC
Newton Kansan WICHITA — For the ninth time overall and third time in a row, the Santa Barbara Foresters claimed the title of the National Baseball Congress World Series. The Foresters stopped Hays Larks 12-1, the sixth time Hays has finished as runner-up in the 88 years of the tournament.
