By Kansan Staff Mirror’s STAND program has been selected to receive the Kansas Hospital Association’s Distinguished Health Care Advocacy Award. A program of Mirror, Inc., STAND is a group of more than 140 students in six high schools across Harvey and Marion Counties whose work is peer-to-peer health advocacy.

In Semptember of 2019 the city of Newton passed a “T-21 Ordinance,” an ordinance that makes it a violation of city ordinance for retailers to seel tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21. The ordinance went into effect Jan.

About a month ago millling of the center lanes of K-15/Main Street between U.S. 50 and Fourth Street began. Cones and traffic control wnet up, forcing all traffic into the two outside lanes of the road. The work was visible, and then, it was not. The contractor for the job, Cornejo and Sons, has run into a shortage that slowed the work.

The past two election cycles have seen an explosion of attention given to “echo chambers,” or communities where a narrow set of views makes people less likely to challenge their own opinions. Much of this concern has focused on the rise of social media, which has radically transformed the information ecosystem. However, when scientists investigated social media echo chambers, they found surprisingly little evidence of them on a large scale – or at least none on a scale large enough to warrant the growing concerns. And yet, selective exposure to news does increase polarization. This suggested that these studies missed part of the picture of Americans’ news consumption patterns. Crucially, they did not factor in a major component of the average American’s experience of news: television.
