Cheney wins 22nd straight at Newton’s expense
The Cheney Diamond Dawgs won its 22nd straight game Thursday night at Klein-Scott Field, stopping the Newton Sluggin’ Rebels 6-5 in Sunflower Collegiate League play. Ryan Scott drove in the winning run for Cheney on a fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh inning.
Festival begins, honors resident
Greg Hanson, the spark plug behind the Sand Creek Summer Daze festival, took a microphone on June 7 to make an emotional announcement during opening ceremonies at the band shell in Athletic Park. He was about to give the “Sand Creek Summer Daze Local Hero Award.” “This is for a resident who has gone beyond normal means to help the community out in different ways,” Hanson said.
