As I drive around town seeing the Vote Yes signs for the euphemistically labeled “Value Them Both” amendment, I wonder if those who put up the signs understand what is at stake. They may have a moral or religious objection to abortion, but do they really want the state to have the authority to interfere in our private and personal lives? While the issue may be identified as “abortion,” it is fundamentally an issue of the rights of women to reproductive health care and control over their lives. If approved, the proposed amendment opens the door to further threats to rights that have been codified into law. Like the camel with its nose under the tent, legislators hell-bent on forcing women and girls to give birth no matter the circumstances will push their agenda further to restrict the sexual and reproductive rights of women and families. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is based on many factors. To impose the legal system over that decision flies in the face of individual freedom and sets women’s rights back 50 years. Most of us find ourselves in the middle of what is a very nuanced issue, but extreme and loud voices seek to destroy that middle ground – safe and legal access to abortion with restrictions – which is the law in Kansas now. If the amendment passes, it will open the door for the complete criminalization of abortion and more in our state. I urge you to join me in voting “No” to the proposed amendment.
