WICHITA — The Goessel High School track teams claimed six medals Friday and Saturday in Class 1A competition at the state track championships at Cessna Stadium. The Goessel boys were 24th out of 57 team scoring.

In the years following the bitter Civil War, a former Union general took a holiday originated by former Confederates and helped spread it across the entire country. The holiday was Memorial Day, an annual commemoration was born in the former Confederate States in 1866 and adopted by the United States in 1868.

Dear Doctors: I think that as I get older, I may be developing a sensitivity to caffeine. If that’s actually something that can happen, it will make me very sad. I have always loved my cup of coffee in the morning, but now I find that it makes me a bit racy. I would love to understand why.

As is custom, the Newton American Legion post remembered veterans for Memorial Day with a ceremony in Greenwood Cemetery. An Avenue of Flags was created, and flags were placed on the graves of veterans in the cemetery.

WICHITA — The Newton High School track teams claimed a title in the first events of the day Friday in the Class 5A state track and field championships at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. Senior Hayley Loewen won the triple jump in 35-11 ¼.
