Railers convert corner kicks to win
The Newton High School girls’ soccer team gave up 11 corner kicks and took just three against Hutchinson Tuesday in AV-CTL I play at Fischer Field. The Railers scored on two of those corner kicks in a 3-0 win over the Salthawks, snapping a seven-game losing streak.
In the garden: Weeds are opportunists
Stress your lawn, invite weeds! Anybody have henbit? Weeds are opportunists, taking advantage of open spaces in thin, weak stands of turf. Although improper fertilizing, watering, and mowing are the most common causes of poor lawns, insects and diseases can also expose the lawn to weed invasion. Always try to determine why weeds invaded the lawn and correct the problem. If the basic cause is not corrected, weeds will return even though existing weeds may be eradicated with herbicides.
Car show coming up this weekend
Saturday hundreds of cars, trucks, motocycles and everything in between will descend upon downtown Newton, for the annual Newton Car Show. This is the third year of the Newton Car Show, as organized by the Mid-Kansas Muscle Car Club , though the show has deeper roots.
Denver claims third straight title
While Newton’s Sand Creek Station may rank high in elevation, but it was the men from the Mile High City who came in and claimed the title at the 40th Summit League Championships. The Denver University Pioneers edged North Dakota State 850-851 to win the title for the third straight year.

AP source: Saints agree with Mathieu on 3-year, $33M deal
The New Orleans Saints and Tyrann Mathieu have agreed to a three-year, $33 million contract, reuniting the All-Pro safety with his hometown team, a person familiar with the terms told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person confirmed the contract, first reported by ESPN.com, on condition of anonymity because it was not yet signed. It includes $18 million guaranteed, a sizeable investment for a safety who turns 30 next week. The Saints had been searching for help at the position after Marcus Williams signed with the Ravens in free agency and Malcom Jenkins announced his retirement.
Bethel grad takes gold at Penn
A Bethel College Graduate picked up a gold medal in the Penn Relays, hosted in Philadelphia David E. Ortman, 69, Seattle, Washington, a Bethel College (1975) graduate, this year made his fourth trip to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
