CHENEY — The Halstead Dragon softball team ran into a buzzsaw Monday night in undefeated Cheney at the Cheney Sports Complex. Halstead fell 12-1 in the first game in five innings on the 10-run rule.
CHENEY – The Halstead Dragon baseball team went on the road Monday to claim a non-league split against Cheney at the Cheney Sports Complex. Halstead won the first game 8-5 and dropped the second game 14-13 in eight innings. “We’ve been doing that a lot,” Halstead coach Danny Driskill said. “We’ve split every one except one. We did well to fight back (in the second game). It’s just one of those things. Baseball is baseball. It seems like game ones have gone our way and game twos have gone like those tonight.”
The Newton High School girls’ soccer team played a strong first half, but the Derby Panthers picked up the pace in the second half to claim a 3-1 win Tuesday in AV-CTL I play at Fischer Field. “We were able to play very well all around in the first half,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said.

Joan Welfelt passed away April 11, 2022 at her home in Montrose, Colorado. She was born in Halstead, Kansas August 1, 1923 to Roderick O. Moore, Sr. and Mable (Windmiller) Moore. She is the youngest of three children and was raised on a farm northeast of Mount Hope, Kansas. During the Great Depression, they moved to Florida, California and Wichita, Kansas to find work.
Ross Michael Scheffler was born on March 31, 1949, in Newton, Kansas to parents Art and Catherine Scheffler. Ross was an outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting and fishing from a young age. He especially enjoyed hunting with his Dad, brother and uncles. Ross loved to bow hunt and was an excellent marksman.
