Japan is expelling eight Russian diplomats and trade officials and will phase out imports of Russian coal and oil. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Moscow must be held accountable for “war crimes” in Ukraine. He says Japan will also ban imports of Russian lumber, vodka and other goods, and will prohibit new Japanese investment in Russia. It will also step up sanctions against Russian banks and freeze assets of about 400 more individuals and groups. Earlier Friday, Japan’s Foreign Ministry announced it was expelling eight Russian diplomats and trade officials, joining similar moves in European countries.
A group claiming to be the oldest continuously-meeting women’s group in Kansas recently made a donation to help Newton Public Library continue operating in the nex few decades. The Ladies Reading Circle of Newton recently made a $1,000 donation in support of the campaign to build a new Newton Public Library building.

At the end of an assembly at Slate Creek Elementary April 8 students all took a deep breath, and then repeated the “school promise.” “I am safe, I am loved, I can handle anything.” Slate Creek Elementary chose to focus on something a little different during a school redesign process. As a result, students and staff have begun to focus on telling themselves they are loved.
Author Marlena Fiol has a connection to Newton - it is the Newton area where her parents grew up. And it was her parents that would change how the disease leprosy is treated “They were ordinary people who accomplished the extraordinary because of their love of God and belief in the dignity of all humans, especially those who are under served,” Fiol said.
Bethel College’s director of bands, Joel Boettger, will give a faculty jazz recital on campus, backed by several friends from the Wichita music scene. The concert is April 13 at 7 p.m.
