Taking Home Rule seriously in Kansas
Many Kansas Republicans likely guffawed in disbelief when Governor Laura Kelly recently insisted she was “a major local-control advocate.” The image of Democrats as favoring big government programs, with Republicans fighting to keep government small and local, is deeply entrenched. The language of the state GOP, presenting Kelly’s emergency orders during the pandemic as examples of “one-size-fits-all” overreach, employs this stereotype expertly.
Not a clear cut issue
On March 23, 2022, the Taliban in Afghanistan closed girls’ high schools, hours after they had re-opened. Afghan girls will not be able to attend school beyond fifth grade. As a teacher, I am angry that these students are denied any higher education. Yet this is not a black-and-white issue. And while this Taliban action is among the darkest, much of the rest of the world operates in the gray as well. Given equal test scores and measured abilities, “he” will be paid more and promoted higher than “she.”

Bethel softball squad drops two games
YORK, Neb. — The Bethel College softball team suffered another setback in KCAC play, dropping two games Saturday a York College.
Errors hamper efforts by Newton baseball team
MAIZE – The Newton High School baseball team had its chances in both games against Maize South Friday in AV-CTL I play in Maize, but 13 errors undermined those efforts. Newton lost the first game 6-4 and the second game 7-4.
Bethel gets qualifier
