Celebrate National Arbor Day, the last Friday in April, by planting new trees and caring for established ones in your landscape and community. This special holiday was first celebrated in 1872. Arbor Day celebrations continue to recognize the important role trees play in our environment and more recently their impact on our mental and emotional well-being.

The city has been working for several years to replace a water storage tank on W. First Street, the oldest water tank in use by the city at this time.

The first phase of work on Hesston Road, also known as Old 81, is complete That phase was the milling of asphalt on a section of roadway between Newton and Hesston. Crews have revealed the concrete underneath, concrete that was installed an estimated 80 years ago when the road was part of U.S.

Following a report of a “gun like object” being seen at Newton High School, the school was placed on lock down for a little more than an half an hour as a number of students fled the school. Following investigation by the Newton Police Department, police announced what students saw on campus was a “Splat Gun.” A splat gun is a battery powered water gun that shoots water pellets.

A project to reconfigure parts of Centennial Park and renovate others has been slowed over the course of the last year as bids for the project have not been under budget. And the project was thrown a curveball.
