We took toil, trouble to rank ‘Macbeth’

When one thinks of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” performances by legendary actors such as Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Orson Welles likely come to mind. But that didn’t intimidate Denzel Washington, who confesses he’d never seen a production of the play before taking on the lead role in Joel Coen’s black and white “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (now in select theaters and streaming on Apple TV+).

Extending fireworks misery

I was appalled by the report in the newspaper today regarding the city decision expanding the misery to be induced by the July 4 celebration in Newton in 2022. I have been complaining for the entire seven years I have been living in Newton about the noise created by fireworks after the legal hours for their use. What a nightmare you have created now.

Where are the tax payer dollars going?

As we continue to battle COVID in Kansas and the local area, we have friends, neighbors and loved ones becoming seriously ill or dying from COVID and COVID Related Conditions. The last issues for 2021 of the Harvey County Now, Harvey County Independent and Newton Kansan contained the obituaries of numerous Halstead and Harvey County Neighbors that’ve died from COVID or related conditions.

It’s crystal ball time. • While Hollywood insiders mud wrestle over who should get which Oscar nominations for what, the rest of us can look forward, not back. • The pandemic made a mess of movie schedules for months, and screwed up the making of more. All that is still sorting out, and will be for a while. But we know enough to have 10 movies we’re looking forward to in 2022. • There are always dark horses that gallop up out of nowhere, and schedules can change during the best of times. But there are some new films worth getting excited about, too – any year Jordan Peele directs a new horror movie and Steven Spielberg pays a cinematic visit to his Phoenix years qualifies. • Here are 10 films we’re looking forward to watching.
