Mark R. Deschner, 50, Project manager for Blackburn Construction company passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021 Mark is the son of Richard and Carolyn Deschner of Newton, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law; Shawn Ketzner. Mark is survived by his loving family. Wife; Malea, Children; Wes, Lena and Abby. Sister; Susan (Dave) Simons. In-laws; Richard and Corene Ketzner and brother-in-law; Todd (Karissa) Ketzner. Family visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2021 followed by a funeral services at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2021 both at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Andale, Kansas. Pope cites new book on nun abuse in warning to superiors ROME – Pope Francis last weekend drew attention to a problem that the Vatican has long sought to downplay: the abuses of power by mother superiors against nuns who, because of their vows of obedience, have little recourse but to obey. During an audience with members of the Vatican’s congregation for religious orders, Francis cited a new investigative expose of the problem written by a reporter for the Holy See’s media, Salvatore Cernuzio.

Storm sweeps through with high winds

A windstorm that set records swept through Kansas and neighboring states Wednesday, leaving Harvey County with minimal damage while wildfires kicked up in other areas of the state. According to The Storm Prediction Center, the day set a record for the most hurricane force wind gusts — defined as 75 miles per hour or stronger — in a day at 55.

Omicron reaches Kansas

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced Dec. 16 the state Health and Environmental Laboratories has found the Omicron variant of the COVID- virus in one Kansas resident — an adult from Franklin County.
