Newton opens fall sports practice

The Newton High School girls' golf team opens the season Aug. 30 at the Derby Invitational.

The Railer football team opens the season Sept. 3 at Andover Central. Newton will play in a pre-season jamboree Aug. 28 at McPherson with Valley Center.

Monday marked the first day under Kansas State High School Activities Association rules that fall sports teams could begin full practice.

Newton has seven varsity teams competing this fall — football, volleyball, cross country, boys’ soccer, girls’ golf, girls’ tennis and gymnastics.

The volleyball and gymnastics teams are state qualifiers from last season.
