Goessel boys set for league, post-season charge
GOESSEL — The Goessel Bluebird boys’ basketball team will have a lot of experience entering the 2020-21 season.
Curtis Guhr begins his 10th season as Goessel head coach.
The Bluebirds were 16-8 last season, 8-1 in Wheat State League play. Goessel won its Class 1A regional title, but fell in the sub-state semifinals to Beloit St. John’s-Tipton Catholic 70-63 in overtime.
Five letterwinners return from last season — Jake Hiebert (6-4, sr., 4.2 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.5 spg), Nate Zogleman (6-1, sr., 7.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.1 APG), Luke Wiens (5-9, sr., .4 ppg, .7 rpg), Skyler Wuest (6-0, jr., 6.7 ppg, 3.5 rpg) and Caiden Duerksen (6-1, jr., 5.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg).
“We have many letter winners returning from a team that competed well last season,” Guhr said. “They seem to be eager and ready to work hard and make this a great year. We have large numbers in the program again so finding the right people who fit into roles will be important to how successful this year can be. Hopefully we can build off last years success and continue to build our program.”
Guhr expects Little River, Elyria Christian and Solomon to be among the top contenders in Wheat State League play this season.
