BC men hold off Bethany

It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but the Bethel College men’s basketball team got a lead midway in the first half and held it the rest of the way to down Bethany 82-69 Wednesday night in KCAC play at Thresher Gym.

The game was put together on short notice. It was Bethany’s second game of the season after a three-week layoff.

“We got that lead and consistently kept it around 10,” Bethel coach Jayson Artaz said. “They cut it to five or six, then we made another big run and finish it off. Overall, we were pretty consistent. It was hard to get into a flow. It had a weird feel to it. There were some foul calls to break up the flow of a lot of things. We didn’t do a good job of creating flow for ourselves on the offensive end. We didn’t pass the ball as well as we normally do. We didn’t move with the ball as well as we normally do. We got enough stops and we got points in the paint.”

Jaylon Scott led the Threshers with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Bryant Mocaby added 18 points. Jalyn Todd also had 11 rebounds.

Equan Ards led 1-1 Bethany with 16 points. Isiah Saenz scored 14 and Malcolm Clayton scored 11.

The biggest difference in the game was free throws. Bethel was 25 of 36. Bethany was 12 of 20. The Threshers also held a 45-30 rebounding edge.

After a close game the first six minutes, Bethel broke out to a 11-point lead. Saenz hit back-to-back treys for Bethany to get the Swedes back within five. Bethel pulled back out by nine at the half, 40-31.

Bethel built a 14-point lead early in the second half. A Saenz trey got Bethany within six with 8:58 to play. Bethel replied with a 7-0 run.

A Scott putback with 3:29 to play put Bethel up by 13. Scott added a free throw with 1:50 to play. Bethany broke its drought with a pair of free throws with 50.5 seconds to play.

Bethel wins its third straight. The Threshers are 4-3, 4-2 in KCAC play. Bethel plays at 8 p.m. Monday at Sterling in a rescheduled game. Saturday’s game at Kansas Wesleyan has been postponed with no make-up date set.

SCOTT HONORED — Bethel junior Jaylon Scott was named the KCAC offensive and defensive player of the week for the week ending Nov. 22.

In two games, both Bethel wins, Scott scored 49 points with 20 rebounds, 12 assists and six steals.

Scott is a 6-5 junior from Allen, Texas.
