set record

The Bethel College volleyball team snapped a nine-match losing streak, but may have set a record in doing it.

Bethel fell to Southwestern in four sets — 25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21; but came back to down Saint Mary in three sets — 25-20, 37-35, 25-21.

It was Bethel’s first matches in about a month.

Bethel broke a school record in the second set for most points scored in the rally-scoring era. The set was nine points off the NAIA record (46-44 in 2004, Urbana vs, Wooster).

Bethel was led against the Spires by Mia Loganbill with 16 kills. Kendra Gooden added 11 kill. Gabby Valdez set 27 assists, followed by Kaitlyn Shima with 19. Valdez and Katey Wilhelm each served two aces. Shima and Valdez each had 14 digs. Harlie Hunton, Kendra Gooden and Jade Gleason each downed two blocks.

Jalen Keener led USM with 11 kills. Jaycee Mack scored 10. Haydan Heuermann set 34 assists. Mack and Heuermann each served two aces. Bailey Chintala had 20 digs, followerd by Caela McGee with 13. Mack downed four blocks.

Saint Mary fell to 0-5.

Southwestern was led by Sydney Morris with 12 kills. Kaila Harris set 21 assists, followed by Sydney Hancock with 20. Jacquelyn Bogner and Harris each served two aces. Sophia Wicker had 19 digs, while Hancock had 15. Elizabeth Borgelt downed two blocks.

Loganbill led Bethel with nine kills. Valdez set 17 assists, while Shima set 10. Loganbill served a pair of aces. Wilhelm had 18 digs. Hunton downed four blocks. Loganbill downed three.

Southwestern is 4-10, 4-3 in KCAC play.

Bethel is 1-7, 1-2 in KCAC play, and hosts Bethany at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Bethel basketball

games postponed

The Bethel College men’s basketball team’s game scheduled for Tuesday at the University of Arts & Sciences of Oklahoma was postponed because of the weather.

The women’s team’s game scheduled for Wednesday at Hastings College also was postponed because of the weather.

No make-up dates have been set.

The women host USAO at 5 p.m. Friday at Thresher Gym. The men and women host Oklahoma Wesleyan Nov. 4.
