Swathers set to make run in 2020

HESSTON — The Hesston High School football team will be set for another season of challenging for league, district and state honors.

Coach Tyson Bauerle returns for his fourth season with the Swathers. He is 29-10 at Hesston and 31-19 in his career.

Bauerle is assisted by Doug Broadfoot (26 years at Hesston, 31 years overall), Phil Unruh (12 years at Hesston, 13 years overall), Parker Broadfoot (eight years, all at Hesston) and Garrett Roth (first year). Also on the staff and handling the middle school program are Chris Koehn, Rich Wingfield and Todd Lafferty.

Hesston was 7-2 last season, 4-1 in Central Kansas League play. Hesston fell in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Clearwater 35-28.

“Like most seasons, expectations are high to uphold the tradition of Hesston Football,” Bauerle said. “Last season, the senior class set a new standard of commitment throughout the offseason and that led to a very strong regular season. This season, we’ll need many individuals to step up to collectively move in that same direction. The potential pieces could be there for another very strong season.”

Returning offensive starters include Owen O’Halloran (5-9, 210, sr., OL), Cody Wohlgemuth (5-10, 190, sr., OL), Dalton Carey (6-2, 215, sr., OL), Ben Bollinger (6-4, 185, sr., WR), Brady Cox (5-8 150, sr., WR) and Braden Esau (6-0, 185, sr., TE).

Bollinger had 448 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Cox had 348 receiving yards with four touchdowns and 167 rushing yards with a touchdown. Esau had nine catches for 115 yards and three touchdowns.

O’Halloran is a first-team All-CKL pick, an honorable mention all-district pick and an honorable mention all-state pick in two media polls. Bollinger is a first-team all-league pick, a first-team all-district pick and an honorable mention all-state pick in two polls. Cox is a first-team all-league pick and an honorable mention all-district pick. Esau was an all-league and all-district pick.

Others with starting experience include Nick Arnold (6-2, 195, jr., RB), Brayden Schilling (6-5 185, jr., WR) and Max Werner (6-0 160, jr., WR).

Arnold had 168 yards rushing with two touchdowns. Schilling had six catches for 75 yards and a touchdown in an injury-shortened season. Werner had nine catches for 85 yards in an injury-shortened season.

Defensive returning starters include O’Halloran (DL), Bollinger (DB), Jadyn Medina (5-10, 130, sr., DB), Esau (LB), Cox (LB) and Ryan Eilert (6-0, 185, jr., LB).

O’Halloran was an honorable mention all-league and all-district selection. Eilert was an all-league honorable mention.

O’Halloran had 40 tackles, four for a loss. Bollinger had 11 tackles and two pass breakups. Medina had 18 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Esau had 34 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery. Cox had 25 tackles, three for a loss, a sack, a pass breakup, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Eilert had 44 tackles, two tackles for a loss, a sack and two fumble recoveries.

Others with starting experience on defense include Wohlgemuth (DL) and Arnold.

Wohlgemuth had 21 tackles and a sack. Arnold had 20 tackles, two sacks and a tackle for a loss.

Returning special teams players include Eilert (P) and Wohlgemuth (P-K).

Eilert was a second-team All-CKL pick.

Other returning players include Nathan Whitsitt (5-10, 230, sr., OL-DL), Medina (WR), Eilert (QB), Brett Cox, (5-7, 155, so., RB), Cooper McCormick, (5-11, 235, so., OL-DL-LB), Tyrone Taylor (5-6, 160, so., HB-DL-LB), Jake Proctor (6-0, 160, so., QB-WR), Dalton Carey (6-2, 215, sr., DL), Schilling (LB), Werner (DB), Jeremy Telles (5-9, 175, so., DL) and Isaac Sanchez (5-7 165, so., DB).

Top varsity newcomers include (all sophomores) Jake Proctor (6-0 160, QB-WR-DB), Tigean Lange (6-0 230, OL-DL), Colton Diller (5-8 150, WR-DB), Hayden Hartung (5-11 200, OL-DL) and Bailey Reed (5-8 145, RB-LB).

“We will return a number of very good, multi-sport athletes that have gained varsity experience throughout the years in a number of sports,” Bauerle said. “Many of those multi-sport players started last season. We return six seniors that started on offense and five seniors that started on defense last season. A total of 17 letter winners will return, which will increase competition for reps and also start fall camp off on a quick note.”
