Halstead has titles to defend

The Halstead Dragons look to defend their league and regional titles this season and advance further in the playoffs.

HALSTEAD — The Halstead Dragons are set to be locked and loaded for another competitive run in the Central Kansas League.

Jason Grider begins his seventh season as Halstead’s coach. He is assisted by Ryan Voran, Jesse Mueller, Adam Glendening and Alex Queen.

Halstead was 8-1 last season, 5-0 in the Central Kansas League. Halstead tied for the league title with Hoisington (the two teams didn’t play last season). Halstead also won the district title at 5-0.

Halstead fell to Wichita Collegiate 35-14 in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

“The Dragons return a lot of experience from a team that made a lot of noise in 2019,” Jason Grider said. “The offensive should be explosive and the defense should have the size and speed necessary for a deep run in 2020.”

Returning starters on offense include Doug Grider (6-2, 235, sr., FB), Cole Herman (6-4, 275, sr., G), Lakin Farmer (5-10, 175, sr., RB), Kaden Lopez (5-8, 195, sr., RB), Nathan Darbe (6-0, 220, T) and Carter Hiebert (5-10, 175, sr., SL).

Doug Grider rushed for 1,083 yards with 22 touchdown. Farmer hit 15 of 36 passes for 244 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Farmer also rushed for 734 yards and 11 touchdowns. Hiebert had 134 yards receiving with three touchdowns.

Returning starters on defense include Doug Grider (LB), Herman (DL), Farmer (S), Lopez (DL), Hiebert (S) and Cameron Kohr (5-10, 140, sr., CB). Doug Grider had 120 total tackles and 4.5 sacks. Farmer had 72 total tackles, seven interceptions and a fumble recovery. Herman had 48 total tackles and two fumble recoveries. Hiebert had 40 total tackles and three interceptions. Lopez had 29 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. Kohr had 21 total tackles and an interception.

Doug Grider was a first-team all-league and all-district pick on both sides of the ball. He was named to multiple media all-state teams. Herman was a first-team all-league and all-district pick on defense. He was a second-team all-league pick and first-team all-district pick on offense. He also was named to multiple media all-state teams. Farmer was a first-team all-league defensive back and honorable mention quarterback and was a first-team all-district quarterback. He also was named to multiple media all-state teams. Lopez was an honorable mention all-league and all-district pick on the offensive line. Hiebert was an honorable mention all-district defensive back.

Other returning letterwinners include Kaden Hill (5-8, 170, sr., OL/DL), Conner Boyd (6-0, 170, jr., RB/DB), Chandler Drake 6-0, 205, jr., RB/LB), Alex Schulte (5-10, 175, jr., OL/LB) and Jackson Swift (5-10, 165, jr., TE/OLB).
