Newton senior Asha Regier (1) was a first-team all-league pick and second-team all-state pick last season.

Newton High School volleyball coach Jamie Dibbens has high hope for her squad as it takes the court for the 2020 season.

The Railers have six starters back from a team that finished 20-17 overall and took second in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I at 10-2.

Newton fell to Kapaun-Mt. Carmel in three sets in the quarterfinals of Class 5A sub-state play.

Dibbens begins her 14th season at Newton. She is 463-143 at Newton and 475-165 for her career.

“We only graduated one senior so we are returning a lot of our starters,” Dibbens said. “We do have a lot of power from our outside hitters, we need to work on speeding up our offense and consistency with passing and defense. Also, we have more depth than the last couple of years, so even within our own team we will have a lot of competition for different positions.”

Returning starters include Lindsey Antonowich (5-10, sr., MB), Marah Zenner (5-5. sr., S), Asha Regier (5-9, sr., OH), Gracie Rains (6-0, jr., OH), Tegan Livesay (5-10, so., MB) and Olivia Antonowich (5-6, so., DS).

Regier was a second-team Class 5A All-State selection, also named first-team all-league. She put down 422 kills with 51 services aces, 52 total blocks, 415 digs and two assists.

Zenner was a second-team all-league selection. She had 815 assists, 106 kills, 31 aces, 16 blocks and 218 digs.

Lindsey Antonowich was an honorable mention all-league pick. She had 90 kills, 30 aces, 268 digs and seven assists.

Olivia Antonowich had 36 aces, 225 digs and three assists. Rains had 248 kills, 28 aces, 38 blocks and 200 digs. Livesay had 36 kills, 32 aces, 34 blocks, 182 digs and two assists.

Another returning letterwinner is Makaylee Ybarra (5-8, sr., RS). Ybarra had 13 kills, two aces, three blocks and 30 digs.

Dibbens looks for Maize, newcomer Maize South and Derby to be among the top contenders for the league title. Top non-league foes include Bishop Carroll and Andover.
