Baseball tryouts


The Newton Baseball Club is hosting tryouts and evaluations for the 2021 season Saturday at Centennial Park.

Those in the 8U and 12U age groups will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. Those in the 10U and 14U age groups will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

BC updates


The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference updated its football schedule for the 2020-21 season.

Teams will play up to 10 games in the fall and/or up to three in the spring depending on circumstances.

Fall play begins Sept. 12 and will end Oct. 31 or Nov. 21.

If the conference elects to end the season Oct. 31, play will resume March 6 and end March 13 with a make-up date March 27, followed presumably by the NAIA playoffs.

Thunder re-signs

D Schmitz

WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder re-signed third-year pro Garrett Schmitz for the upcoming season.

After four years at NCAA Division III Hamline University, where he scored 12 goals and 18 assists in 99 games, Schmitz signed with the Birmingham of the Class A Southern Professional Hockey League, where he scored 10 goals with 23 assists in 50 games. He also scored a goal with three assists in eight playoff games.

He was signed by Wichita last season, scoring seven goals with 13 assists in 55 games.
