Junior Knights finish tourney 2-2

BUHLER — The Newton American Legion Post 2 Junior Knights 16U baseball team opened postseason play with a 2-2 finish in a tournament Friday through Sunday in Buhler.

Newton opened play with a 3-2 win over the Salina Eagles Friday. On Saturday, Newton fell to the Salina Hawks 5-1.

On Sunday, Newton edged the Buhler Nationals 5-4 in six innings on time limit and lost to the Salina Hawks 7-2.

Against the Eagles, Newton scored two runs in the third inning and a run in the fourth. Salina scored both runs in the top of the sixth. The game was called after six innings on time limit.

Andrew Barron threw five innings for the win, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Cade Valdez finished the game, allowing a hit with two strikeouts.

Luke Hirsh and Ryan Ruggerio each drove in a run for the Knights.

Parker Graves drove in both runs for Salina.

Brody Farthing took the loss for Salina. Cooper Cobb also pitched.

In the first game against the Hawks, Newton outhit Salina 4-3. The Hawks scored three runs in the third inning and two in the fifth. Newton scored in the fourth inning.

Ethan Bolen went 2-for-3 for the Hawks, driving in three runs. Parker Schultz drove in Newton’s run.

Bryce Cooper pitched five innings for the Hawks for the win, allowing one run on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Jayton Mathis finished the game for the save, allowing a walk.

Joe Slechta took the loss for Newton, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits with six walks and four strikeouts. Jayden Nash finished the game, striking out two.

Against Buhler, Newton trailed 4-2 after three innings. Newton scored two runs in the fifth. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Barron singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an error to end the game.

Barron finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ruggerio and Owen Mick each drove in a run. Jake Schmidt went two for three hitting.

Blake Ellis went 2-for-3 for Buhler with two RBIs. Levi Atherton and Mace McCabe each drove in a run.

Schmidt threw 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Schultz retired two batters for the win.

Ellis took the loss for Buhler, allowing one earned run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Carson Moler took the loss, allowing an unearned run on a hit with a walk.

In the Knights’ second game against the Hawks, the Hawks scored in every inning except the sixth. Zach Davidson pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on one hit with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Mathis went 3-for-4 hitting with two RBIs. Nick Schultz also drove in two runs. Jarrett Pittenger went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Trace Horniman went 3-for-3.

Valdez took the loss in five innings, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Schultz pitched an inning, allowing a hit.

Schmidt had Newton’s sole hit and drove in a run. Grayson Ybarra also drove in a run.

Newton ends the season 10-7.
