JUNCTION CITY — The Newton American Legion Post 2 Senior Knights baseball team finished 2-2 in a tournament Saturday and Sunday in Junction City.

Newton opened with a 7-4 win over the Ottawa Arrows, followed by a 5-3 loss to the Salina Falcons. On Sunday, Newton fell to host Junction City 7-3 and beat the Topeka Senators 7-2.

Against Ottawa, Newton led 6-0 after three innings and held off the Arrows from there.

Josh Edson went two for four hitting, driving in four runs. Jake Schmidt also drove in a run. Trev Golubski went three for four hitting. Henry Claassen went two for four hitting.

Ian Akers pitched four innings for the win, striking out six. Cade Valdez went two innings, striking out two. Kobe Burns finished the game.

Against Salina, Newton trailed 3-0 after the first inning. Salina added two more runs in the sixth inning. Newton scored a run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Ryan Ruggerio went two for three hitting for Newton with an RBI. Akers and Josh Edson each went two for four. Golubski also drove in a run.

Ben Schmidt went five innings on the mound for the loss, striking out seven. Valdez struck out one in the sixth inning.

Junction City took a 4-1 lead over Newton in the first three innings, adding three runs in the sixth. Newton scored a pair of runs in the seventh.

Akers and Claassen each drove in a run for Newton.

Joe Slechta took the loss for Newton, striking out four in 5.1 innings. Burns finished the game.

In the finale against Topeka, Newton scored a run each in the second, third and fourth innings and put things in hand with a four-run fifth inning. Topeka scored two runs in the sixth.

Camden Fenwick went 6.2 innings for the win, allowing two runs on two hits with three walks and six strikouts. Griffin Davis struck out the sole batter he faced to end the game.

Luke Boston went two for four with an RBI. Zach Loomis went two for two with an RBI. Akers, Claassen and Ben Schmidt each drove in a run.

Newton is 13-11 and plays the Bartlesville (Okla.) Indians at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Arkansas City.
