Rebels score late to stop Mulvane

Darius Gaston grounded into a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in a run and lift the Newton Rebels to a 6-5 win over the Mulvane Patriots on Sunday night in Sunflower Collegiate League play at Klein-Scott Field.

Matt Abshire put Mulvane in the lead in the top of the second inning with a three-run home run. Newton claimed two runs in the bottom of the second — one on a wild pitch and one on a Sam Kissane single. An error led to a Newton run in the fourth inning. Enzo Bonventre added an RBI single in the fifth inning. Andrew Brautman hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Mulvane came back, scoring on a passed ball in the top of the seventh. Colby Standard hit an RBI single for Mulvane in the top of the eighth to tie the game.

The Patriots were retired in order in the top of the ninth.

Hibiki Ouchi was 2-for-4. Ricky Hockett went 2-for-3.

Starter Zach Bravo pitched seven innings, striking out 14. Chandler Henkelman pitched the eighth inning for the win. Zach Gillig retired the side in the ninth for the save.

Abshire finished 3-for-3 for Mulvane. Colby Standard went 2-for-4. Cade Phelps was charged for the loss on the mound for the Patriots.
