Food drive July 11

SafeHope is partnering with Newton Saturday Night Cruising on July 11 for a food drive to benefit their food pantry.

The evening will feature a socially distanced cruise of Main Street. Bring nonperishable food and monetary donations between 7 and 8:30 p.m. to the Dollar General parking lot on Main Street.

GOP ice cream social scheduled

The Harvey County Republican Party will have its annual ice cream social at 6:30 p.m. July 13 in Athletic Park at the shelter near Fifth Street.

The U.S. Senate candidate forum will include Bob Hamilton, Kris Kobach, Dave Lindstrom and Roger Marshall

Fourth District U.S. Representative Ron Estes will also attend.

Kansas House 72nd District representative candidates will include Avery Anderson, Lance Gormley, Dwight McAdow and Kathy Valentine.

Harvey County commissioner, District 3 forum will include Roger Lowery, Don Schroeder and Michael Weber.

Newton seeks nominations for Yard of the Year

Have you seen a great-looking yard in Newton? Nominate it for 2020 Yard of the Year!

Nominate your favorite yards at, at City Hall water billing office or the Newton Public Library through July 24. Nominated yards will be judged based on appearance, creativity and overall condition, with extra points given for landscapes that require less water.

To be eligible, nominees shall not have violated any City of Newton Uniform Code Regulations within the past year. The winners will be honored at a City Commission meeting and will receive a gift certificate and a yard sign to display.

North Newton City Council to meet

The North Newton City Council will meet at 7 p.m. at North Newton City Hall.

Agenda items include a face mask ordinance, an entrance sign project, economic development report and a budget work session.

The meeting will also be streamed on the internet via Zoom. Those would like to speak about a nonagenda item during citizens’ comments will need to email their statement to by 3 p.m. July 13. To listen to the meeting call 620-327-7369 to get the meeting ID.
