New principal named at Chisholm Middle School

Special to The Kansan
Joey Menniga has been named principal of Chisholm Middle School.

Joey Menninga has been selected as the next principal at Chisholm Middle School.

He has been with the Newton school district since 2004.

“The opportunity presented itself,” Menninga said. “I thought it would be a really good chance to lead the school and to make a positive impact on the students and the staff and to help make Chisholm and awesome place to be for everyone.”

Menninga spent the last year as the assistant principal at Chisholm Middle School. Before taking the assistant principal position, Menninga was the director of the Chisholm and Santa Fe 5/6 Center orchestras. Menninga has worked with students from Chisholm from the beginning of his career at USD 373.

“It was where I started my early teaching career,” Menninga said. “It’s been my teaching home ever since. It’s all I know. It’s a great place with great students, great families and excellent staff. It’s the perfect blend of small-town feel but close to the amenities of a big city. And Chisholm Middle School has a really good, positive vibe.”

In his spare time, Menninga stays busy playing music. In the past, he has had the opportunity to perform in a variety of locations, including Carnegie Hall, Disneyland, Tijuana, Mexico, Sweden and across the United States. He continues to be involved in a number of performance ensembles, including the Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony and Silver Sound String Quartet. Menninga also plays violin/fiddle with a local, Irish punk rock-inspired band called The Sassanachs.

Menninga holds a master’s degree in music education and educational leadership from Wichita State University and a bachelor’s degree in music education and viola performance from Bethany College.
