HESSTON — An annual Christmas event in Hesston will continue this year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic and county crowd size limits put in place by Harvey County.

The outdoor event will have additional safety protocols in place. The 2020 Winter Luminary Walk “The Prairie Sleeps” will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m Dec. 5 and 6 with five half-hour reserved slots each night at the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains, 177 W. Hickory in Hesston.

The cost of admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 years and younger. All tickets must be purchased in advance at dyckarboretum.org or in the Arboretum office. This is an outdoor-only event. See the website for COVID-19 safety guidelines to be observed.

According to a news release, the event will give attendees the opportunity to “experience the quiet beauty of Kansas in winter: dormant native grasses shifting in the wind, lights reflecting in our pond, and leafless trees lit from below like living sculptures.”

The annual event is a fundraiser for Dyck Arboretum, a nonprofit organization.

COVID-19 safety guidelines for all attendees include:

• Choose and purchase tickets for one of five half-hour slots to help evenly distribute attendees each evening.

• Wear face masks at all times while on the Arboretum grounds.

• Keep at least 6 feet of distance from people not in your group.

• Circulate around the path in a clockwise flow of traffic.

• There will be no indoor spaces for gathering and restrooms will be available only for emergencies.
