Railer spikers swept at South


SALINA — The Newton High School volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play in Salina.


Newton fell to Derby 20-25, 25-17, 25-23; and Salina South 29-27, 25-21.


Derby was led by Sophia Connor with 10 kills, Tatum Boettjer with eight and Addy Brown with seven. Addy Foster and Morgan Humphrey each served two aces. Adi Igo and Boettjer each downed four blocks, followed by Lexi Pitts with three. Foster had 11 digs. Humphrey set 33 assists.


Newton’s stats were not available.


Newton is 15-8, 4-6 in AV-CTL I play, and plays Saturday at the Derby Invitational.


Newton soccer team claims win


HUTCHINSON — The Newton High School boys soccer team claimed a 2-1 overtime win over Hutchinson Thursday in Hutchinson.


Scoring details were not reported at deadline.


Hutchinson falls to 5-7, 1-2 in league play.


Newton improves to 7-5, 1-2 in league play, and plays Tuesday at Maize.

Hesston swept at Hoisington


HOISINGTON — The Hesston Swather volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Thursday at Hoisington.


Hesston fell to Beloit 25-14, 23-25, 25-20; and Southeast of Saline 20-25, 25-16, 25-23.


Hesston is 6-11 and plays Saturday at Clay Center.

Bethel meet rescheduled


The Bethel College cross country invitational has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 17 at the BC cross country course. No spectators will be allowed at the meet, but the meet will be live streamed at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/bethelks/.


Friends adds three sports


WICHITA — Friends University will add men’s and women’s wrestling and men’s golf for the 2021-22 school year.


The additions increase the number of team fielded by Friends to 23.


"We are excited to announce the addition of these programs," Friends athletic director Rob Ramseyer said. "We believe we are positioned to be competitive quickly and are looking forward to getting them started."


The additions will bring the number of schools in the conference offering women’s wrestling to seven, men’s wrestling to six and golf to 10.


Friends already offers women’s golf.


Thunder signs forward Bauer


WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder re-signed forward Lane Bauer for the upcoming season.


Bauer is a fourth-year pro, who spent his entire professional career in Wichita. He has 18 goals with 45 assists in 153 games. He also has a goal with three assists in six playoff games.
