Santigo Fernandez had the hot foot for the Newton High School boys soccer team with two goals and an assist in a 4-1 Railer win over Salina Central in non-league play Tuesday at Fischer Field.

"I got the penalty just right in front of the goal and Mikey Parga dribbled through everyone like he does and played it right to my foot," Fernandez said. "He beat the same guy twice right in front of the goal. The energy was there. We changed positions a little bit. We had a formation change in the beginning. Then we switched it up. Being back in our original positions made it a little more comfortable."

Newton moved to 6-3 with wins in four of its last five games, while Central dropped to 2-4-1.

"In the first half, we probably played our worst half of soccer all season," Central coach Cameron Hunter said. "It was pretty positive to only be down 1-0. I felt like it could have been a lot worse. In the second half, we started picking it up until they started scoring at the end. It was just one of those days. We just have to have a short memory and go back to the drawing board."

Newton got on the board in the 16th minute when Eduardo Lopez-Garcia put in a shot rebounded out by a Central defender. Newton struck again in the 49th minute when Collin Hershberger finished a through pass from Fernandez.

Central got back in the game when Logan Johnson knocked in a Jesus Contreras direct kick. Fernandez put things away with a goal from Parga and then converted a penalty kick.

Newton outshot the Mustangs 21-3, 17-2 on target. Grant Sheppard had 13 saves in goal for Central. Selvin Abrego had one save for the Railers.

Newton opens Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Campus. Central opens AV-CTL II play Thursday at home against Valley Center.

"We just have a lot of senior leaders this year," Fernandez said. "We’re a strong team because of that."

"It should be a tough one," Hunter said. "Definitely a winnable one. Hopefully, we can pull it off at home."

JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton junior varsity downed Salina Central 7-0. The game was shortened to 20-minute halves with all seven goals in the second half. Fernando Campos Cisneros scored three goals with an assist. Jonathan Galvan scored two goals with an assist. Juan-Pablo Salgado and Erick Valdivia each added a goal.

Newton plays at 5 p.m. Thursday at Campus.
