The Andover Central defense outscored the Newton defense 14-7 to lead the Jaguars to a 41-34 win over the Railers Friday night in non-league prep football action at Fischer Field.
Kyle Kohman scored on a 53-yard pass from Chase White with 8:21 remaining in regulation to break open a 34-34 tie. Interception returns for touchdowns from Davin Simms and Shane Frey in the first half proved crucial for the defending Class 4A runners-up.
"It was a wild game for sure," Central coach Derek Tuttle said. "I was excited about some of those plays early, the pick sixes. I was a little disappointed about some of the big plays we gave up. We also gave some up on special teams. We’re going to have to clean that up. I have to give a lot of credit to Newton. They’re a very good ball team. They are very well coached. They executed very well."
Central’s Chase White hit 18 of 30 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown. Almost as important was his two field goals and hitting five of five PAT kicks. Kohman finished with nine catches for 178 yards and a touchdown. Aston Barkdull rushed for 65 yards on 11 attempts with a touchdown. Simms had 42 yards receiving and 23 yards rushing to go with his pick six. Simms is a recent transfer from Derby, starting the season with Wichita Northwest.
"Chase has been working really hard in the off-season," Tuttle said. "He’s got a ways to go, but he’s making really good decisions."
Newton was led by Ben Schmidt, who hit 19 of 34 passes for 280 yards with three touchdowns. Kenyon Forest rushed for 150 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. Forest also had 56 yards receiving with a touchdown. Peyton Maxwell had 11 catches for 195 yards and two scores. Maxwell also threw a touchdown pass.
"We turned the ball over far too much and we made too many mistakes," Newton coach Chris Jaax said. "We had some technical issues. The guys did fight back from some bad situations. We have to just be getting better. The kids played hard. It’s frustrating."
Newton opened the game with a nine-play, 72 yard drive that ended with a five-yard pass from Ben Schmidt to Maxwell. Newton tried a kick fake on the PAT attempt and the pass was out of the end zone when it was caught.
The Newton defense then made a five-down goal line stand that included a face mask penalty, but Simms scored on a 58-yard interception return. White hit the extra-point kick to take the lead.
An 86-yard Maxwell kickoff return was wiped out on a penalty.
Central got to the Railer 9, where White hit a 19-yard field goal. One play from scrimmage and 15 seconds later, Frey returned an interception 25 yards for a score.
Central got another break when a bad punt snap hit the turf in the end zone. The punter appeared to be in the grasp of a Railer defender while kicking the ball away, but Newton was still called for roughing the punter. Central scored five plays later on a seven-yard Barkdull run.
Jaax said he was told the punter was not running with the ball and was still under protection.
Newton struck back on a lateral from Ben Schmidt to Maxwell, who then threw a 47-yard TD pass to running back Forest. Collin Hershberger hit the PAT kick.
A Central fumble set up a 30-yard pass from Ben Schmidt to Jake Schmidt.
The Railers stopped Central on downs to open the third quarter. Two plays later, Ben Schmidt hit Maxwell for a 49-yard TD pass.
Central came back with a drive of its own. White ran the ball to the goal line, but coughed it up to lineman Landon Coy, who covered it for a Jaguar score. Another Central drive ended on a 31-yard White field goal.
Newton tied the game early in the fourth quarter on a 51-yard Forest run, but Central came back with a 53-yard pass from White to Kohman.
Newton got the Central 26 with 49 seconds to play, but an incomplete pass in the end zone allowed Central to kill the clock.
Central plays Friday at Buhler. The Crusaders fell to Goddard 35-20. Newton hosts Derby Friday. Derby fell to Mill Valley 45-14 in a battle of defending state champs.
"We’ll be ready to go," Jaax said. "We can’t focus on the other team. We have to just focus on ourselves and get better."
