One big inning on offense proved to be the difference in each game of a doubleheader between the Hutchinson Colts and Newton Senior Knights Wednesday at Klein-Scott Field.

In the first game, a six-run second inning led to a 9-4 Knight win. Hutchinson scored four runs in the first inning of the nightcap, holding on to a 6-4 Colt win.

“We started really slow in the second game,” Newton manager Evan Gilbert said. “We have to be able to throw multiple pitches for strikes to be successful. We need quality at-bats, not just in the last four innings. That will help even out the deficit. We’re just preaching consistency and approaches when they show up. We need to take that step from being a good team to a great team. We’re working on it. We came a long way and we’re still shaking the dust off.”

In the first game, Newton used five hits with three errors in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Newton added a run in the fourth inning on a balk.

A pair of errors, two walks and a hit batter in the top of the fifth allowed Hutchinson back in the game with two runs. Newton answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Tyler Radloff hit a two-run double for Hutchinson with two outs in the top of the sixth. Luke Hirsh hit an RBI single for Newton with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

Hutchinson drew a walk and a single with two outs in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game.

Camden Fenwick pitched two innings of relief for the win. Starter Kobe Burns and Fenwick each struck out three. Trev Golubski and Gavin Cusick each pitched an inning.

Bennett Turner took the loss for Hutchinson. Tabyn Smith finished the game. Turner struck out four and Smith struck out five.

Newton’s Josh Edson and Henry Claassen each went two for four hitting with an RBI.

A pair of walks to start the second game, followed by two outs, led to an infield RBI single for Smith. Kyle Elliott then hit a two-run triple. After another walk, Zach Hogan added an infield single for an RBI.

Hutchinson loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third, leading to two runs.

Newton scratched out a pair of runs in the bottom of the third with two outs, aided by an error. Newton added a run in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded balk. A wild pitch led to a Newton run in the bottom of the seventh.

Radloff threw four innings for the win, striking out eight. Carter Booe finished the game for the save, striking out two.

Zach Loomis faced eight batters, taking the loss. Cole Lujano, Griffin Davis and Ben Schmidt finished the game. Davis and Schmidt each struck out two.

Radloff, Tabyn Smith and Zach Hogan each had two hits for Hutchinson.

Hutchinson is 2-7. Newton is 2-2.

Both teams compete in a tournament Friday and Saturday at Wheatland Park in Buhler with the Buhler Nationals and the Kansas Curve.

“It’s a very good tournament, but I feel like if we play like we’re capable, we can come out of there looking pretty good,” Gilbert said.

Newton plays at 6 and 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.
