McPHERSON — Two area wrestlers finished one win away from a state berth after the completion of the first KSHSAA West Regional Girls’ Wrestling Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the McPherson Roundhouse.

Newton’s MayLee Edwards and Hesston’s Juliene Wald each fell in the consolation quarterfinals, just missing the top-six finish required to advance to state.

This was the first year the KSHSAA sponsored girls’ wrestling as a championship sport.

The tournament drew wrestlers from 68 schools. Great Bend edged Western Athletic Conference rival 123-122 for the meet title. Host McPherson edged Emporia 100-99 for third place. Wichita North was fifth at 79.

Newton took 44th with 12 points. Hesston, with one entry, was tied for 47th with 10 points. Remington failed to score.

Edwards, wrestling at 143 pounds, opened Saturday’s competition with an 8-1 decision over Cacaia Sandman of Larned. In the consolation quarterfinals, Edwards was pinned my Marissa Hanrahan of Great Bend in 19 seconds.

Edwards ends the season 18-11.

Elia Bergquist of Newton at 101 pounds fell in the third consolation round to Esabel Talavera of Wichita Heights in 2:48. Bergquist ends the season 8-15.

At 136 pounds, Alexis Ellis fell in the third consolation round to Dakota Ely of Canton-Galva 11-8. She ends the season 10-16.

Newton’s Emily Torres finished 0-2 at 109 pounds and ends the season 9-14. Jaye Skinner finished 0-2 at 116 pounds and ends the season 2-17. Jaymie Murray was 0—2 at 155 pounds and ends the season 3-14.

At 109 pounds, Hesston’s Juliene Wald opened Saturday’s action in the third consolation round, pinning Anahi Cervantes of Garden City in 1:27. In the consolation quarterfinals, Wald dropped a 12-1 major decision to Amilia Martinez of Holcomb.

Wald ends the season 17-9.

"We are extremely proud of Juliene, plus she is the answer to a Hesston High trivia question: Who is the first Hesston competitor to win and earn team points for Hesston at the first KSHSAA sanctioned girls’ regional tournament?," Hesston coach Doug Broadfoot said. "She and about 500 other girls across Kansas made history competing at two super-regionals with participants from all classifications. The top six girls qualified for the state tournament in Salina this Thursday. Next year, KSHAA will need to make changes in order to accommodate the large number of participants.

"Juliene competed in an extremely tough and large 23-wrestler bracket with multiple top-6-ranked wrestlers competing in her weight class. She pinned three competitors with a deep half nelson pinning combination that she is really persistent with. As a freshman, she has lots to improve on, but she’s a competitor with a great attitude and determination enough to get better. Hopefully, we will have more girls out to join Juliene."

For Remington at 191 pounds, Samantha Evans lost in the first round and drew a bye in the first consolation round. Evans will continue Saturday in the second consolation round, needing two wins to clinch a state berth.

Cora Thiel finished 0-2 at 109 pounds. Madelyn Ball finished 0-2 at 130 pounds. Willow Blackfox finished 0-2 at 170 pounds. Samanthan Emmons finished 0-2 at 191 pounds.
