McPHERSON — Three area schools are represented in the first KSHSAA West Regional girls’ wrestling tournament Friday at the McPherson Roundhouse.


After the first day of competition, Great Bend leads the field with 91 points, followed by Emporia with 69, Garden City with 68, McPherson with 58 and Nickerson with 54.5.


Among the area schools, Newton is tied for 41st with 11 points. Hesston is tied for 46th with seven points. Remington has yet to score.


There are 68 schools represented in the meet.


Newton has three wrestlers still competing after the first day of competition.


Elia Bergquist finished 1-1 at 101 pounds. Alexis Ellis finished 2-1 at 136 pounds. MayLee Edwards finished 1-1 at 143 pounds. All will compete in the third consolation round, needing two wins to advance to state.


Newton’s Emily Torres finished 0-2 at 109 pounds and ends the season 9-14. Jaye Skinner finished 0-2 at 116 pounds and ends the season 2-17. Jaymie Murray was 0—2 at 155 pounds and ends the season 3-14.


Hesston’s Juliene Wald finished 2-1 at 109 pounds and continues Saturday in the third consolation round.


For Remington at 191 pounds, Samantha Evans lost in the first round and drew a bye in the first consolation round. Evans will continue Saturday in the second consolation round, needing two wins to clinch a state berth.


Cora Thiel finished 0-2 at 109 pounds. Madelyn Ball finished 0-2 at 130 pounds. Willow Blackfox finished 0-2 at 170 pounds.


The meet continues Saturday. The top six in each weight class advance to state Feb. 27 at the Tony’s Event Center in Salina.
