WICHITA — Joel Rumpel stopped 29 of 30 shots in goal to lead the Wichita Thunder to a 3-1 ECHL win over the Kansas City Mavericks Wednesday night at INTRUST Bank Arena.
Dan Correale scored 53 seconds into the game for the Mavericks’ sole goal. Assists came from Hunter Smith and Nate Widman.
Wichita tied the game 39 seconds into the second period on a goal by Travis Brown with assists from Travis Ewanyk and Chad Butcher.
Wichita took the lead 5:23 into the third period on a goal by Butcher with an assist from Ewanyk. Wichita took command with a goal midway in the final period by Matt DeBlouw with assists from Greg Chase and Istvan Sofron.
Tyler Parsons had 23 saves in goal for the Mavericks, 12-11-0-0, in fourth place in the ECHL Central Division.
Wichita improves to 16-2-2-0, with a three-point lead over the Colorado Eagles in the ECHL Mountain Division. Only the Florida Everblades have a better record than Wichita in the ECHL, by just one point.
Wichita hits the road for the next two weeks, starting at 6:35 p.m. Saturday at Indianapolis.
