WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts began its final homestand of the regular season with a 10-6 win over the Salina Stockade Friday night in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Barring the need for another travel team, the series will be the final one for Salina, An expansion team in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Ill., will take the Stockade’s place next year.
Wichita jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings of play. T.J. Mittelstaedt hit a two-run single in the first inning. Brent Clevlen, Mittelstaedt and Martin Medina each drew bases-loaded walks in succession in the second inning.
Jesse Baker put Salina on the board in the top of the fifth with an RBI single. In the sixth inning, Cody Coffman drove in a run with a triple, scoring on a Jordan Callouet single. Kewby Meyer drove in Callouet with a sacrifice fly.
Wichita came back with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Medina RBI single.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Christian Stringer hit a two-run home run for Wichita. Mittelstaedt hit an RBI triple and came home on an error.
Fernando Garza hit an RBI double for Salina in the top of the ninth, moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Jesse Baker ground out.
Jordan Cooper (8-2) went 5 1-3 innings for Wichita to get the win, allowing four runs on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Josh Goossen-Brown, Mike Devine and Seth Harvey finished the game.
Connor Bach (2-8) lasted four innings for the Stockade in the loss. Three other pitchers followed.
Wichita is 58-38, while Salina drops to 18-79. The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today, 1:05 p.m. Sunday and 2:05 p.m. Monday at Lawrence-Dumont.
Wichita remains tied with Lincoln for the second-best record in the AA. Both teams are 2 1/2 games behind Winnipeg.
