The Newton Post 2 Junior Knights had chances in both games of a doubleheader against Augusta Post 189 Monday in American Legion Baseball play at Klein-Scott Field.

In the first game, Augusta scored 11 runs in the top of the seventh to break open a close game and claim a 17-4 win. In the second game, Augusta scored in the top of the sixth to claim a 2-1 win. The second game was shortened because of a late start.

In the first game, Newton scored on an error in the bottom of the first inning. Walks and an error in the top of the second led to four Augusta runs. Jayden Wilson had a two-run single.

Newton scored a run in the bottom of the third on a double-run down play.

A pair of walks to open the fifth inning led to a pair of Augusta runs. Newton used three singles and a hit batter in the sixth to score a pair of runs.

The wheels came off for Newton in the top of the seventh, giving up 11 runs.

Dominic Ketchum finished the game with three hits and three RBIs for Augusta. Wilson had two hits and three RBIs. Gavin Payne drove in two runs.

J.C. Roberts pitched five innings for the win. Sean Spencer finished the game for the save.

Newton used three pitchers with Josh Hanson taking the loss. Zach Kennell and Josh Edson each had two hits for the Knights.

Play was delayed shortly during the bottom of the fourth because of rain.

In the second game, a hit, a pair of walks and an error led to an Augusta run in the first inning. Newton scored on a double-run down play in the bottom down play in the fourth inning.

With bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth, an error led to a run. Newton was retired in order in the bottom of the sixth. Kennell took the loss for Newton.

The Junior Knights will host Inman at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kenny Williams Field in a recently added game.

NEWTON HOSTS ZONES — The Newton Junior Knights will host an American Legion Class A Zone Tournament July 9, 10 and 12 with the Andover Jaguars, the Andover Trojans and the Clearwater Indians. The top two teams advance to state. The first two days will be played at Klein-Scott Field. The third day will be at Kenny Williams Field.

The Senior Knights will host a Legion Class AAA Zone July 16, 17 and 19 at Klein-Scott Feld with the Arkansas City Black Diamonds, Nickerson, the Salina Falcons and Wichita Aviators. The top two teams advance to state.

Whitehead went two for four hitting for Augusta. Luke Boston went two for two hitting for Newton.

Whitehead pitched the last two innings for Augusta to claim the win.
