The Bethel College softball team managed to stay close to KCAC contender Oklahoma Wesleyan, but couldn’t manage a win, falling 7-3 and 7-4 Thursday at Wedel Field.

Bethel falls to 15-16, 6-8 in KCAC play. OWU improves to 23-18, 10-2 in KCAC play.

In the first inning of the first game, the Eagles loaded the bases on a walk, an error and hit batter with one out. Kierra McFadden and Kaylee Clinton each drove in a run with a single. After a pop out to the pitcher, Heather Jones was hit by a pitch to score a run.

Bethel came back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on an error and an Abbie Hutton RBI single.

In the bottom of the second, Clinton hit an RBI single and McFadden hit a sacrifice fly for a run.

In the top of the sixth, Clinton hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. OWU added a run on an error.

Alyssa Sullivan hit an RBI single for Bethel in the bottom of the sixth.

Brianna Miller finished two for three hitting for OWU. Madison McDowell finished two for three hitting for Bethel.

Ashleigh Capps threw 5 1-3 innings for OWU for the win, allowing one earned run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Mykelti Shelton finished the game with a walk and a strikeout.

Hutton took the loss for Bethel, allowing two earned runs on five hits with four walks. Rylie Scudder finished the game, striking out three and allowing one earned run on three hits.

In the second game, OWU scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI ground out for Clinton and an error. The Eagles added a run in the top of the fourth on a Jayci Wang RBI single.

Bethel scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, aided by four errors.

The Eagles came back in the top of the fifth on a two-run Lindsay McKenna triple. Ally Raines drove in McKenna on a ground out.

Michelle Schrag hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth. Heather Jones hit an RBI single for OWU in the top of the seventh.

Michaela Shouldis and McKenna both went two for three hitting for OWU. Bethel managed just three hits in the second game.

Makayla Kelley went five innings for the win for OWU, allowing two earned runs on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts, Shelton finished the game, allowing two hits, two walks and a strikeout.

McDowell took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Scudder pitched the final three innings, allowing four runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

With eight games remaining, Bethel drops to eighth place in the KCAC, which is the final post-season spot. Bethel plays at Ottawa at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Braves are 21-15, 5-4 in KCAC play.
