BURRTON — A facilities upgrade and healthy numbers lead to a sense of optimism for the Burrton High School track team.
Terry Bruton begins his 14th season as the Chargers’ head coach. He is assisted by Patty Dole abd Kenna Teel.
The Burrton boys were fifth in the Heart of the Plains League last year, while the girls were sixth.
The sole state qualifier returning is junior Samantha Simoneau, who competed in the discus. She also will compete in the shot put and relays.
Other returning letterwinners include senior Brendan Dick in the high jump, discus and shot put; sophomore Dustin Hughes in the high jump and javelin; junior Ronni Salgado in the long jump, sprints and relays; senior Maddie Winter in the sprints and relays; senior Matthew Whitehurst in the distance events; and junior Bradley Cooprider in the 400- and 800-meters.
Other athletes for the Chargers include senior Nathaniel Watson, sophomore Kyle Boyle and freshman Steven Canada. Other girls include senior Kaylene Matlack, senior Angyl Swartz, sophomore Hannah Watson, and freshmen Lexi Zehr, Addi Matlack and Kassi Salgado.
“This season will be exciting for the Charger track team,” Bruton said. “We have a new track to run on. The team has enjoy the first couple weeks on the new track. We will host our first meet April 18th. State qualifier, Samantha Simoneau will lead the lady chargers in the throwing event along with Kaylene Matlack. The boys team will be lead by Brendan Dick in the discus, also Bradley Cooprider has shown some progress from last year. Again, excited for the 2017 season.”
