The Newton High School track teams will have a baker’s dozen of returning state medalists to begin the 2017 season.

The Newton girls also will look to defend their first-ever state team title.

Tad Remsberg begins his 13th season as head coach. He also coaches the sprinters, hurdlers and sprint relays.

Assistant coaches include Richard Mick (distance), Tony Hein (sprints, long jump, triple jump), Peter Anderson (throws), Mario Nava (distance), Adam Williams (high jump), Tyler Swalley (pole vault) and Lisa Antonowich (throws).

Both the boys and girls are defending champions in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I and regionals. The girls won the Class 5A state title, while the Railer boys finished fifth.

Senior Jen Andres, junior Taylor Antonowich and junior Savannah Simmons won the state titles in both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. Sophomore Kalli Anderson was a member of the 4x100-meter relay. Sophomore Maggie Remsberg was a member of the 4x400-meter relay.

Anderson took second last year in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, followed by Simmons, who took third in both events. Andres was fourth in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 100-meter dash.

Maggie Remsberg took third in both the 100-meter high and 300-meter low hurdles. She also took fifth in the long jump.

Kailey Harris took third in the triple jump. Nicole Engelen took eighth in the javelin.

For the Newton boys, senior Kade Remsberg won the 100- and 200-meter dashes as a sophomore and took second in both events as a freshman. He missed most of last season with an injury.

Senior Aidan Mills is the defending runner-up in the shot put. Landon Moore took fifth in the triple jump. Garrett Mick and Javier Moreno both took fifth in the 4x800-meter relay. Mick also took seventh in the 800-meter run. Jackson Forest took seventh in the shot put.

Other returning state qualifiers for the girls are Megan Bartel and Nancy Gonzalez in the 4x800-meter run, Brooke Lachenmayr in the shot put and Alaina Stucky in the 3,200-meter run.

Other returning state medalists for the boys include Nathan Ahrens in the discus, Zach Garcia in the high jump and 4x100-meter relay, Connor Garcia in the 4x100-meter relay, Kelby Lawrence in the 100-meter high and 300-meter intermediate hurdles and Jerik Ochoa in the 4x100-meter relay.

“Both teams should be very competitive this season,” Tad Remsberg said.
