Cheney 56, Hesston 55 (2OT)

GARDEN PLAIN — The Hesston Swather girls fell to Cheney 56-55 in double-overtime Thursday in the Class 5A sub-state semifinals in Garden Plain.

Hesston led 10-7 after the first quarter, but trailed 22-14 at the half and 33-31 after three quarters. Hesston tied the game 45-45 at the end of regulation.

The scoring in the two overtime periods was not differentiated.

Haley Albers led Cheney with 29 points, eight in overtime.

Kailey Jo Ince scored 26 points for Hesston, 10 in the fourth quarter and six in overtime. Rylie Schilling added 10 points.

Hesston ends the season 16-6. Cheney is 18-4 and plays rival Garden Plain at 6 p.m. Saturday in the finals.

GOESSEL — The Goessel High School girls’ basketball team used a 20-7 fourth quarter to get by Little River 58-38 Thursday in the semifinals of the Class 1A, Division I sub-state tournament in Goessel.

The Bluebirds led 13-12 after the first quarter, 25-22 at the half and 38-31 after three quarters.

Eden Hiebert led Goessel with 20 points, followed by Brittney Hiebert with 11.

Freshman Isabelle Eberle scored 14 points for Little River, followed by Melanie Renken with 13. Little River ends the season 8-14.

Goessel improves to 18-3 and hosts Rural Vista in the finals at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Hillsboro 44, Moundridge 43 (OT)

CANTON — The Moundridge Wildcat boys fell to Hillsboro 44-43 Thursday in the Class 2A sub-state tournament in Canton.

Moundridge led 23-15 at the half and 27-24 after three quarters. Hillsboro tied the game 37-37 at the end of regulation.

“Kids played their tails off tonight, especially on the defensive end,” Moundridge coach Vance Unrau said. “We executed in the half court and were aggressive to the basket. Going to miss our seniors. Fun to be around and brought a climate and culture to our program that I am proud. Disappointed for them that we couldn't find a way to win tonight. It's always difficult to end the season, but it's rewarding to know that these guys gave everything they had on the floor tonight for their school, community and their teammates.”

Elias Werth scored 12 points for Hillsboro, followed by Darian Ratzlaff with 10.

Noah Eichelberger scored 16 points for Moundridge, followed by Anthony Otte with 10.

Moundridge ends the season 13-9. Hillsboro improves to 16-6 and faces 16-6 Lyndon at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Canton in the finals.
