win opener

The Bethel College men’s basketball team opened the season with an 84-70 win over Grace (Neb.) Thursday night at Thresher Gym.

Bethel trailed by as many as nine in the first half, but cut the deficit to four at intermission, 44-40.

Down 51-45 early in the second half, the Threshers made a 12-0 run and never trailed again. Bethel led by as many as 15 in the second half.

Bethel hit 17 of 41 from the field in the first half and 15 of 30 in the second half. Grace went 17 of 31 in the first half, but went cold in the second half, hitting just seven of 25. Both teams struggled from 3-point range as Grace went three of 15, while Bethel was four of 21 shooting from long range.

Deven Goodwin scored 25 points for the Threshers. Jacob Miller scored 16 points with 10 rebounds. Chris Robinson scored 13 points, while Austin Mitchell scored 12.

Jarrod Sheffield scored 17 points for Grace. D.J. Hanes and Tristan Nelson each scored 15 points. Nelson had 12 rebounds. Andre Aguilera scored 10 points.

Bethel gets little time to celebrate the win. The Threshers play Central Christian at 8 p.m. today in McPherson. Central received votes in the NAIA Division II top 25.

Halstead downs

Sterling

HALSTEAD — The Halstead High School football team ended the regular season with a 71-8 win over Halstead Thursday in Class 3A district play.

Halstead wins the district title at 3-0, 8-1 overall. Sterling falls to 6-3, 2-1 in district play. Both teams advance to the playoffs.

The Dragons held Sterling to 48 yards total offense, -5 yards rushing.

Tony Morris had nine carries for 131 yards rushing and a touchdown. Chase VanSteenburg and Kaden Kraus each rushed for two touchdowns. Layke Heimerman rushed for 71 yards and a score.

VanSteenburg also hit one of two passes for 13 yards and a touchdown. Kraus caught the touchdown pass.

Freshman Aric Propst returned an interception for a touchdown. Halstead returned a punt for a score.

Halstead hosts Southeast of Saline at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

to Central Plains

GOESSEL — The Goessel High School football team ended the season with a 60-12 loss to Central Plains Thursday in Eight-Man I district play in Goessel.

The game was called early in the fourth quarter on the 45-point rule.

Central Plains ends the regular season 8-0 overall and 5-0 in district play, advancing to the playoffs.

The Oilers were led by Devin Ryan, who hit 10 of 12 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Dalton Beck had 84 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Anthony Oberle and Dylan Lemicux each added a rushing touchdown.

Alex Barton had five catches for 86 yards and three scores.

Bryce Miller returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.

For Goessel, Josh Schmidt hit 20 of 37 passes for 277 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Trevor Beisel had nine catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns.

Goessel ends the season 5-4, 3-2 in district play.

PEABODY — The Peabody-Burns Warriors punched their ticket to the Eight-Man I playoffs with a 74-52 win over Cedar Vale-Dexter Friday in distict play in Peabody.

Down 12-6 after the first quarters, the Warriors surged to a 28-26 lead at the half and outscored their opponents in each of the next two quarters.

Austin Reynolds rushed 39 times for 412 yards. Reynolds also passed for a touchdown. Bryant Young also passed for a touchdown.

Other scoring details reported were incomplete.

Peabody-Burns improves to 5-4, 4-1 in district play. Cedar Vale-Dexter falls to 5-4, 3-2 in district play.

Peabody-Burns plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul.
