MOUNDRIDGE — After his Moundridge Wildcats collected a dramatic come-from-behind victory during homecoming Friday, head coach Jeremiah Meeks talked to his team about being 1-0, despite the club struggling in the team's first four games.
Moundridge was able to get a 30-24 win over Remington in clash of winless teams that was also the Wildcat's first district game. Win enough district games, and the team can make it to the playoffs.
"Getting the first win of the season is huge," Meeks told The Kansan. "These guys have been busting their butts for us. It hasn't stacked up. ... They came out tonight and played. It was uglier than I would like, but you take a win anyway you can get it."
It was an ugly game — marred with penalties (13 between the two teams) and turnovers (five between the two teams) — however that did not curb the enthusiasm felt on the Wildcat sideline after the team came from behind to win in the second half.
After Moundridge opened the scoring in the first quarter Remington rattled off three unanswered scores and entered the half up 24-12. It looked like the Broncos would be homecoming spoilers. However, Moundridge came out of the break on fire — scoring three straight touchdowns and posting 22 points in the fourth quarter.
"Coach just got us fired up at halftime," said Noah Eichelberger, a junior who not only caught a touchdown pass in the second half but also had a pair of key defensive plays in the waning moments of the ballgame. "We knew we needed to win it. It is homecoming and this was a district game."
On the game's final drive, Eichelberger recorded a sack and a batted ball — helping the Wildcat defense stymie the final Bronco effort of the night.
"I knew they were going to pass it," Eichelberger said. "I just tried to get to the quarterback as fast as I could every single play."
The Wildcats move to 1-0 in district play and 1-4 on the season. Remington falls to 0-1 in district, 0-5 on the year.
