LARNED — The Newton 13-year-old Prep Babe Ruth baseball team downed the Great Bend Warriors 10-4 in the first round of the District 4 tournament Thursday in Larned.

Newton followed with a 9-7 win over Cottonwood Valley Friday.

Newton advances to the semifinals at 5 p.m. Saturday. A win puts Newton in the finals at 6 p.m. Sunday. A loss puts Newton in the consolation semifinals at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Dirtbaggers

PRATT — The Newton Dirtbaggers 12U baseball team fell to the Wichita As 8-7 Friday in the National Baseball Congress Hap Dumont State Tournament in Pratt.

Newton trailed 5-0 after two innings and rallied to within a run by the end of the game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Dirtbaggers downed the Iola Mustangs 7-3 later in the day. Newton led 4-2 after three innings and scored three runs in the top of the fifth.

Hesston to host

state tourney

HESSTON — The Kansas Babe Ruth 16- to 18-year old state tournament will be held Thursday through July 18 at Hesston High School.

Hesston, Liberal, Wellington and Rose Hill have already qualified while two district winners and two wild card teams have yet to be selected.

The winner advances to the Midwest Plains Tournament July 21 through 24 in Holyoke, Colo.

Wingnuts win

8th straight

GARY, Ind. — The Wichita Wingnuts won for the eighth straight game, the longest winning streak of the season for the team, stopping the Gary SouthShore RailCats 11-9 Friday night in American Association play at US Steel Yard in Gary.

Wichita led 5-2 after five innings, but gave up six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Wingnuts came back with three runs in the seventh, two runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth. Gary scored a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Matt Chavez went two for five hitting for Wichita with a home run and three RBIs. Chavez pushed his batting average to .352. Zack Cox went three for four hitting with a home run and three RBIs. T.J. Mittelstaedt drove in two runs. Brent Clevlen went two for five with an RBI. Martin Medina also drove in a run.

For Gary, Jarred Mederos went one for four with a home run and four RBIs. Frank Martinez went two for three with a home run and two RBIs. Brennan Metzger, Alex Crosby and Jaime Del Valle each added an RBI.

Chase Johnson (3-0) threw 1 1-3 innings of relief for the win. Starter Eddie Medina went 5 2-3 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Chad Nading threw an inning. Frankie Reed pitched a scoreless ninth, walking two and striking out one, for his 10th save of the year.

Charle Rosario lasted just four innings in his start with Gary. Andy Roberts went 2 1-3 innings, striking out four. Travis McGee (2-6) took the loss. Jorge De Leon finished the game, striking out two.

Wichita is 30-16, while Gary falls to 25-22. The two teams meet again today.
