On Friday, March 9, 2018, Marguerite C. Stout passed away at the age of 93 years.
She was born in Moss Point, Mississippi, on May 20, 1924, and was the youngest of three daughters of (Ada) Blanche Baker Colley and John Franklin Colley.
Marguerite attended Belhaven for two years before transferring to Louisiana State University, graduating from the EJ Ourso College of Business with a BS degree. She then earned a BME (Bachelor of Music Education) in the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois where she met her future husband, Donald E. Stout. She also received her MS Degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University.
Marguerite began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Unionville, Missouri, teaching grades 1 through 8. She taught elementary and high school orchestra in Russell, Kansas, as well as music methods at FHSU. Her classroom experience also included teaching sixth grade at Washington Grade School in Hays, Kansas for 19 years. She then taught at Felten Middle School in Hays for an additional 9 years until she retired.
She was involved in many organizations including the Phi Mu chapter of Delta Beta, Sigma Alpha Iota and P.E.O. Chapter EC. Along with her husband Donald Stout, she was very involved in both the local Rotary organization as well as the International Rotary organization where she achieved the Paul Harris Fellow recognition. She and her husband were members of the First United Methodist Church in Hays, Kansas and were very involved in the church choir, providing the music that was performed there for many years. Marguerite was also passionate about gardening and was an active member of the Garden Club in Hays.
Marguerite was preceded by her husband Donald E. Stout who passed away in 2006. She is survived by her son David and his wife Ann, daughter Patricia and her husband Cameron, and 3 grandchildren. She also leaves behind one sister, Pauline Ramsey.
The entire family sends thanks and appreciation to everyone who was a part of Marguerite’s life and helped to make it wonderful. While she will be missed dearly, we are comforted by knowing she had a great life!
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Hays, Kansas. Father Jerry Jones will be officiating.
