The former Woman’s Club of Topeka building at 420 S.W. 9th, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is to be auctioned off.
The auction will take place both live and online at 11 a.m. Sept. 2, Higginbotham Auctioneers announced recently on its website at https://tinyurl.com/yxwkrkuf/.
The Kansas Insurance Department owns the property involved, which has an appraised value of $1,464,900, according to the website of the Shawnee County Appraiser’s Office.
Construction was completed in 1925 on the three-story structure, which is located one-half block west of the Kansas Statehouse, said the application submitted in 1982 seeking successfully to get it added to the National Register. The property was owned at that time by Manhattan Buildings, Inc.
The building was designed by architect Frank C. Squires and "can only be classified as 1920s eclecticism at its finest," according to that application.
