The Newton American Legion Baseball teams have canceled all games through July 14, a precautionary measure following a COVID-19 exposure within the Newton USD 373 summer weight program.

"We have not had a case in our baseball program," said coach Mark George. "This is purely reactionary by us. Most of our kids do participate in extracurriculars through Newton schools."

The pause on the season led to the cancellation of the Junior Knights’ July 9 trip to Salina and a July 11 and 12 round robin event at home. The Senior Knights missed out on a July 11 trip to Salina.

He declined further comment on the COVID-19 exposure, deferring to USD 373.

"We shut down summer weights for a week," said Samantha Anderson, public information officer for Newton USD 373. "There is a person that had a potential exposure. No one has tested positive in our weight program, as of now."

All USD 373 athletic activities including cheer and dance were canceled through July 15. This will include practices, individual workouts, outside competition and any summer league activities associated with USD 373.

Should someone test positive, the Harvey County Health Department will notify participants in the weight program.
