The “2020 Senior Send Off” will take the place of the After Graduation Party in Newton.

The sendoff will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 6 at the Newton High School drive-thru lane.

The senior class saw its year cut short when Gov. Laura Kelly issued an executive order closing all school buildings in the state to slow the spread of COVID-19. At that time, classes moved online and all extracurricular activities were canceled.

The action also left the community seeking ways to honor the class of 2020. Drivers in cars, trucks and minivans of all makes, sizes and age took to Main Street on April 18 night for a cruise to celebrate the class of 2020. Signs bearing the name and photo of each senior were placed in front of the high school.

Every senior who attends the June 6 event will receive a thank you bag and treats and will draw a number to receive a prize.

The seniors are required to remain in their cars at all times while at the sendoff to adhere to social distancing.

Prizes will include things like dorm-size refrigerators, televisions, car care kits and gift cards.

A graduation ceremony is being planned by the district for July 31 at Fischer Field in Athletic Park. County health officials met with the school district last week to discuss COVID-19 precautions and the ceremony.
