Newton High School assistant principal Greg Dietz was named the Assistant High School Principal of the Year for Area 4 by the Kansas Association of Secondary Schools.


Dietz is the first Newton school administrator to receive the award since 2003.


Dietz was nominated for the award by principal Lisa Moore.


An assistant principal with the Newton schools for 19 years, Dietz’ duties include intensive training for crisis drills for all students, teachers, and staff. He also organizes all of the NHS academic awards for students who letter academically.


"Greg's strength is his ability to work with families and to build relationships that ensure students are successful at NHS," Moore said. "Greg is a caring, honest, and committed assistant principal. He has great integrity when working through his job responsibilities"


Criteria for the award included being in the position in the building for five years. Nominations were taken in January and February.
