Man dies after motorcycle crash
SALINA — A Salina man died after crashing a motorcycle Saturday.
Salina Police said at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday Jahdiel Mercado, 37, of Salina, was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound in the 2600 block of South Centennial Road on a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle.
Police said Mercado failed to navigate curves in the road and struck the curb at Derussy Road and a left turn sign. Mercado was ejected from the motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet.
Police said Mercado was transported to a hospital Wichita, where he later died from his injuries.
According to police, alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the accident.
Task force asks to remove tax question
LEAVENWORTH — Members of the Leavenworth County Mental Health Task Force are asking that a tax question be removed from the Aug. 4 primary ballot.
In November, Leavenworth County commissioners voted to place the question on the August ballot at the request of the task force.
Members of the task force wanted to seek voter approval for a tax increase at the county level to pay for an additional $1.164 million in funding for mental health services.
But the leadership of the task force now want it removed.
“The COVID-19 Crisis will create hardship and financial loss for most Americans and certainly for Leavenworth County citizens in the months ahead,” Keith Rickard wrote in an April 13 letter to county commissioners.
