21st at Welton

GARDEN CITY — The Newton High School wrestling team finished 21st out of 40 teams Friday and Saturday at the 62nd Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City.

Goddard won the team title with 219.5 points, followed by Pueblo (Colo.) East at 181.5, Windsor (Colo.) at 179, Blue Valley Southwest at 175.5 and Kearney (Neb.) at 168.5.

Newton scored 73 points.

Newton was led by freshman Nick Treaster, who won the title at 106 pounds. Nick Treaster downed Isiah Blackmon of Lewis-Palmer, Colo., 1-0 in the finals.

Grant Treaster finished fifth at 120 pounds. Great Treaster won his first two matches by fall. In the quarterfinals, he lost to Weston Dalton of Pueblo East, Colo., 3-1. After two more wins, Grant Treaster was edged by Jason Henschel of Goddard 3-2 in the consolation semifinals 3-2 in an ultimate tie-breaker. Grant Treatser downed Henschel earlier this season in the Newton Tournament of Champions finals. In the fifth place match, Great Treaster downed Silas Pineda of Garden City 5-0.

Freshman A.B. Stokes finished eighth at 113 pounds at 2-3. Colin Bybee was 13th at 126 pounds. Rio Gomez was 15th at heavyweight at 3-3.

Avery Dutcher was 1-2 at 123 pounds. Sawyer Mock was 0-2 at 138 pounds.

Newton resumes dual meet action at 6 p.m. Thursday at home against Campus.

NHS swimmers

11th at Northwest

WICHITA — The Newton High School boys’ swimming team finished 11th at the Wichita Northwest Invitational held Friday and Saturday.

Wichita Heights won the 19-team field at 342, followed by McPherson at 269, Bishop Carroll at 205, Salina South at 193 and Maize South at 184. Newton scored 103 points.

Creed Ekerberg finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.23. Zach Engelken was 10th in 24.64, a new state consideration (secondary qualifying) time. Engelken was 10th in the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 54.55.

Andrew Barron was eighth in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 1:03.28, a new state consideration time.

The team of Barron, Max Musser, Luke Schmidt and Ekerberg finished eighth in 1:56.64. The team of Engelken, Barron, Simon Hodge and Ekerberg finished eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:42.02, .56 seconds off the automatic state qualifying time.

Newton competes at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Salina Invitational at the Salina South pool.
