The Olathe Northwest Ravens girls’ basketball team held off Kapaun-Mt. Carmel 48-41 Saturday in the fifth-place game of the 44th Newton Invitational Tournament.

Liz Thomas led 8-4 Northwest with 17 points. Mary Reiber and Riley Wade each scored 11.

Ella Anciaux scored 21 points for Kapaun, 6-8.

The difference in the game was Kapaun’s 21 turnovers to six for Northwest.

Down 15-12 after the first quarter, Northwest made a 4-0 run. The Ravens led by three at the half, 23-20.

Northwest made a 5-2 run in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the third quarter. Kapaun got back within two, but the Ravens pulled out by four at the end of the quarter, 32-28.

Northwest pulled out by as many as six in the fourth quarter. Mary Reiber scored a three-point play with 3:38 to play to put the Ravens up by seven, the largest lead in the game. Kapaun replied with a 4-0 run.

Northwest hit free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
